Strength in Service: Sun City AGCRA Volunteers Transform Zoo Habitats

The Sun City AGCRA Chapter proudly partnered with the El Paso Zoo & Botanical Gardens to support conservation, beautification, and animal-care initiatives that directly enhanced both visitor spaces and animal habitats.

Volunteers played a critical role in preparing a quarantine habitat for the Zoo’s incoming male giraffe by removing old bedding and debris, sanitizing surfaces, and following strict animal-health protocols to ensure a safe and healthy transition into his new environment.

The team also supported beautification efforts within the penguin and bird exhibits through cleaning, organization, and habitat improvements while learning more about daily conservation and sustainment practices that support animal welfare.

Additional efforts focused on improving drainage and ground stability within the zebra and greater kudu habitats through the installation of specialized mesh systems designed to reduce flooding, improve footing, and support long-term hoof health for the animals.

Volunteers further contributed to the Zoo’s Missing Orangutan Mothers (M.O.M.) awareness campaign, helping raise awareness about endangered orangutans, habitat loss, and global conservation challenges.

Beyond the work accomplished, the event fostered mentorship, teamwork, and professional development while strengthening relationships across the chapter. The partnership highlighted the impact of service, collaboration, and community engagement in supporting both people and the environment.
