Staying Connected to Horatio Gates' History

Staying Connected to Horatio Gates' History

Submitted by MAJ (Ret) Bill Walker

My sister Joan Walker Miskell, of Beacon, New York, has been the Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Melingah Chapter, in Beacon, New York.

The New York State DAR Regent, Pamela Barrack, is a member of that Chapter, and Joan is supporting her in commemorating New York State's 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War Battles of Saratoga (which was fought on September 19 and October 7, 1777), with restoration, conservation, and renewal projects through the Natural Resource Condition Assessment Program at Saratoga National Historical Park.

One of the projects is restoring a monument plaque with one of the names being Horatio Gates.

Pictured below are snapshots of her project that appeared in the September/October DAR magazine "American Spirit."

Pictured below are MAJ (Ret) Bill Walker and his sister, Joan Walker Miskell.  Their mother (the late Elizabeth Walker Fulmer) was the Regent of Philadelphia's DAR Flagship Chapter for many years.  When Joan became regent of the Melingah Chapter, and while visiting Bill's home in Annapolis, he gave Joan their mother's DAR Regent gavel, an Independence Hall relic.
